At the forefront of this transformation is *Grace Abikoye, a standout graduate who made the leap from an Agricultural Economics classroom at Unilorin to a *full-time role at a prestigious global investment bank in the UK<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her story is not just one of academic success; it\u2019s a powerful narrative of vision, grit, and the will to chart an unconventional path\u2014paving the way for others to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Power of a Merit-Based Ecosystem<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Unilorin, excellence is expected and nurtured. The school\u2019s merit-based recognition system<\/em>, which awards top students with the title of \u201cScholars,\u201d creates a high-performance culture where talent thrives regardless of background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of this culture is fueled by student-led initiatives like *The Investment Society (TIS)\u2014a cross-university platform that grooms young Nigerians for careers in global finance. Grace was not just a member\u2014she was a leader, serving as *President of TIS Unilorin<\/em>, inspiring peers to dream beyond borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breaking into Global Finance<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Grace\u2019s journey into finance was anything but conventional. Without a formal finance background, she knew she\u2019d have to learn fast and position smartly. She actively participated in networking events, joined student societies, and sought mentorship outside the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After multiple rejections, she finally landed a competitive internship in 2021<\/em> at a top-tier global investment bank. The ten-week program<\/em> placed her on the *linear rates trading and FX sales desks, where she quickly discovered that while technical finance was a learning curve, she excelled in *relationship management and strategic thinking<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI leaned into my strengths,\u201d she recalls. \u201cEven though I didn\u2019t have all the answers, I made sure I added value wherever I could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her efforts paid off. She received a fully-sponsored full-time offer<\/em>\u2014all while still an undergraduate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Strategy Rooms to Global Conferences<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, Grace works in a strategic and project management role, supporting executives and coordinating cross-functional initiatives tied to regulation, sustainability, and corporate strategy. Though not on the trading floor, her work is high-impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also participated in initiatives like the BCG Aspire Program<\/em> and the CFA Research Challenge<\/em>, where she deepened her understanding of sustainability\u2014an area now central to her day-to-day work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From stakeholder meetings to international finance conferences<\/em> like *International Energy Week, she\u2019s gaining exposure to global leadership and policymaking\u2014and using that insight to reflect on *Africa\u2019s development potential<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow can this apply to Africa? How can these solutions spark growth back home?\u201d she often asks herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace as a Catalyst for Others<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Grace\u2019s rise wasn\u2019t just a personal milestone\u2014it created ripple effects for others at Unilorin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisdom Odusanya<\/em>, another Unilorin graduate, now works as an infrastructure finance analyst at a global investment bank in the UK. He credits Grace for giving him\u2014and others\u2014the belief that it was possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore Grace, these firms were just names we admired from a distance,\u201d Wisdom said. \u201cShe made it real for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Grace, Wisdom was part of *TIS Unilorin, serving as *Director of Research<\/em> under her presidency, and later taking over as President. With a background in Accounting, he also secured a global finance internship, later translating it into a full-time role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since Grace\u2019s breakthrough, at least four other Unilorin alumni<\/em> have landed full-time roles at global investment banks in the UK\u2014a testament to the path she helped forge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Redefining Success: Strategy, Sacrifice, and Resilience<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Success, for Grace, isn\u2019t about titles\u2014it\u2019s about impact<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ve sacrificed most is time,\u201d she reflects. \u201cEvery decision I made\u2014what to learn, where to show up\u2014was intentional.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her passion for sustainability, strategy, and innovation is infectious. She speaks with conviction about the need for critical thinking<\/em> and real-world action<\/em>, especially in a world facing energy and climate transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps her most defining quality is resilience<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve received so many \u2018no\u2019s,\u201d she says. \u201cBut every rejection was a lesson. If you\u2019re passionate about something, you must keep trying. Learn from your missteps and move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Blueprint for the Next Generation<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Grace, visibility matters. Seeing someone with your background excel opens mental doors. And now, others are walking through the doors she\u2019s held open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNigerians can absolutely compete with graduates from global \u2018target\u2019 schools,\u201d she says. \u201cBut they need the right skills, strategic positioning, and above all\u2014resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her story is proof that ambition, when paired with intention and community, can break barriers<\/em>.
